Google Duo video voicemail, the Smart kitchen and using IFTTT to rule your IOT

THESE days we don’t like to miss a thing! If it’s happening, we want to photograph it, video it, and above all, share it. And what’s the most fun new way of sharing those special moments? Google Duo!

Recently we brought you IOT….and introduced you to a list of things newly connected to the internet. Now, taking an excerpt from the Smart Home, we bring you the Smart Kitchen, and IFTTT. Spoiler Alert: the more IOT you have, the more crucial IFTTT becomes.

And if they couldn’t or didn’t, they’d miss the moment, but now, with the new, bright and shiny google video calling app, Google Duo, you can record a video of up 30 seconds in length and send it to your friend or family member. When they receive your “video voicemail” they can watch it, and then call you back, all thru the app. No more missed “Kodak” moments!

The Smart Kitchen

“A smart appliance is an appliance that includes Wi-Fi or Bluetooth to connect the device to a companion app. The app allows users to control the appliance remotely or to set automatic functions. Some may also have voice controls or connect with other smart home devices such as Amazon Echo or Google Home.”

Smart Fridges can even read out recipes for you, or let you connect to a TV in another room and watch it in the kitchen while you’re cooking.

Smart Microwaves.
I can hear what you’re thinking: “what does a microwave need to do besides heat up my food?” Well, if you don’t have a Smart Fridge, your Smart microwave can read out a recipe for you and even show you short videos to help you prepare that special dish. Not enough? What if it could scan the bar code and download cooking instructions? Or sense the moisture content of your food and prevent you from overcooking/drying out that food? Or what about that sensor that enlarges the display panel when you approach, so that you can better see what’s going on? (OK, even I think that’s a bit lame. Must have been their first “smart” idea).

Smart Stoves/Ovens.
With Smart ovens and stoves, it really IS all about the cooking. A Smart Oven can “connect to apps such as Yummly (https://www.yummly.com/) that provide recipe steps and can automatically preheat the oven to the correct temperature setting, cook food for the proper amount of time, and then turn itself off based on recipe instructions.” Are you cooking with gas and electric? Some Smart Range models “offer a dual fuel option where the stove or cooktop is powered by gas and the oven uses electricity for the best of both worlds cooking experience.”   These options and more can really help you rock in the kitchen!

From the blog that brought you IOT (Internet of Things), comes IFTTT (If This Then That)

As more and more homes become “Smart” homes, filled with more and more IOT, IFTTT (If This Then That statements) becomes a must-do in order to get all the connected devices to work together to run your home the way you wish, according to the rules you establish. And, unlike teenagers, your IOT won’t rebel against your IFTTT!

How does this work? First, you create a simple “If This Then That” statement, such as “If the doorbell rings, turn on the outside front door light.” There is a free site (and I love free sites!) called IFTTT.com (https://ifttt.com) which takes those IFTTT statements and turns them into “Applets.” An Applet is simply a miniature application that executes an IFTTT statement. The site contains the most popular and useful applets, and all sorts of great ideas to help you organize all your IOT according to your own personal IFTTT rules.
