{"id":734,"date":"2015-03-05T19:31:22","date_gmt":"2015-03-05T19:31:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.technology-solved.com\/sw-austin-tx\/?p=734"},"modified":"2023-07-18T02:12:14","modified_gmt":"2023-07-18T02:12:14","slug":"fcc-net-neutrality-mean-us","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.technology-solved.com\/sw-austin-tx\/fcc-net-neutrality-mean-us\/","title":{"rendered":"What does the FCC net neutrality mean to us?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The quick answer is I do not know.\u00a0 More my opinion is actually mixed as to whether is it a good things or a bad thing.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve seen some arguments on both sides of the fence here.\u00a0 This going to probably get a little political which I try to avoid in most my Business discussion.\u00a0 My personal political line (at least I think so) are neither Republican nor Democrat.\u00a0 I do tend\u00a0to\u00a0be more\u00a0Republican minded in business matters\u00a0and\u00a0Democrat\u00a0in\u00a0Social matters.\u00a0\u00a0As this is going to be more of an Editorial, I felt\u00a0a needed\u00a0to disclose that before going into this.<\/p>\n<p>PC magazine\u00a0has\u00a0written what I think is a pretty good article\u00a0on\u00a0this.\u00a0 You can read it <a title=\"The FCC's Net Neutrality Ruling\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pcworld.com\/article\/432126\/the-fccs-net-neutrality-ruling-5-things-you-need-to-know.html\">here<\/a>.\u00a0 \u00a0I do believe they take a positive spin to it.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>On the Con side of this ruling with what I have seen mostly argued by republicans.\u00a0 The argument is by classifying ISPs (Internet Service Provider) as a utility, opening the door for regulation,\u00a0means once again government is preventing &#8220;free trade&#8221;.\u00a0\u00a0 That leads to more taxation, less innovation, and less\u00a0people\u00a0wanting\u00a0to\u00a0invest.\u00a0\u00a0Which in turn mean slower\u00a0or no advancement in\u00a0technology.<\/p>\n<p>On the Pro side of this, it is creates an equal and fair playing field for competitive trade.\u00a0 As well as protects the consumers rights.\u00a0 Lets be honest here, how many end consumers know all that is involved in getting that &#8220;internet services&#8221; delivered to you.\u00a0 How many know that the ISP can set specific limits on what you can do on the service they provide?\u00a0 Even if you are paying for the absolute top tier of service, did you know they could still limit you, either based on what your downloading (ex. Netflix), or even how much you have downloaded in a period?\u00a0\u00a0This link is\u00a0an article that covers\u00a0some\u00a0of the\u00a0limitation some ISP have place on their subscribers.\u00a0 Please keep in mind that article is a little dated and many not be currently accurate, it is just to support that ISP can and have placed limits on our service.\u00a0 In Austin, Texas, we have it good.\u00a0 Google fiber is threatening the dominate two (At&amp;t and Time Warner Cable) and that is driving both the prices down and service offering up.\u00a0 However, that is not true in most places &#8211; many places do not get a choice at all, there is only one provider.<\/p>\n<p>Net Neutrality is more then about bandwidth capping,\u00a0however.\u00a0 It is also about\u00a0the potential for ISPs\u00a0to sell &#8220;fast\u00a0lanes&#8221;\u00a0or Toll lanes\u00a0to\u00a0internet services.\u00a0 The common example\u00a0given is Netflix, but it could be\u00a0anything really.\u00a0 Any video streaming service,\u00a0or music streaming service\u00a0or a particular\u00a0web site.\u00a0\u00a0 Is it fair\u00a0for ISPs to charge the consumer\u00a0for a\u00a0service but then\u00a0also\u00a0charge\u00a0the\u00a0other side of it as well?\u00a0 Consider in the\u00a0US\u00a0on avg.\u00a0we pay higher rates for slower service\u00a0than\u00a0in other countries &#8211; is that fair?\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 One argument\u00a0on the dissenting side would be\u00a0by allowing\u00a0the service provider to sell &#8220;fast lanes&#8221;, it would\u00a0lower the prices to the consumer.\u00a0\u00a0 If that truly\u00a0would happen than\u00a0maybe Net Neutrality is a bad thing.\u00a0 \u00a0That most certainly is true in other areas of technology.\u00a0 Look a search engines such as Google, yahoo, and Bing or Social Media such as twitter, Facebook and\u00a0LinkedIn.\u00a0 Not only do they give you a web site to find other web sites for free or post your most intimate personal information but they also\u00a0now give you free email and cloud based applications.\u00a0\u00a0 Think about the majority of websites out there that sell no products or services but provide some sort of informative outlet all at no cost to the consumer.\u00a0\u00a0 Look at our mobile Apps, that we download for free on our iDevices, Android and Windows.\u00a0 All for &#8220;free&#8221; or so the consumer might think.<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, how many consumers actually know that all that free stuff is paid for by advertisements? That ad that shows up on the\u00a0top,\u00a0side or bottom\u00a0is what\u00a0makes &#8220;free&#8221;.\u00a0\u00a0 How many consumers know that some of those sites, apps and services are not only delivering Ads to you, but they are also capturing information about you when you use them?\u00a0 When you send that email using gmail or yahoo, or when\u00a0searching\u00a0on\u00a0something\u00a0on a search engine\u00a0or posting something on Facebook, do you know\u00a0everything\u00a0is index\u00a0and categorized?\u00a0 Apps on your mobile device might capture your GPS location.\u00a0 All of this so they can deliver &#8220;better\u00a0 ads&#8221; to you.\u00a0\u00a0Ads that are &#8220;relevant to you&#8221;.\u00a0 Giving you &#8220;relevant ad content&#8221; allows them to charge the advertiser more.\u00a0 Look at the windows PC market, not only has the price continued to be driven down by competition but\u00a0the windows computer maker(HP, Dell, Toshiba, Lenovo, etc.) now gets paid to install\u00a0benign forms\u00a0of malware\u00a0or trail-ware on your computer?\u00a0Does some of this offer us a benefit in some way?\u00a0 If I am shopping with my wife, she is in some women&#8217;s shop, I sitting outside holding her purse playing candy crush and an ad comes up that has an awesome price on an awesome computer at a store near by, is that bad?\u00a0\u00a0 Does the majority of consumers actually know all this and accept it much like we accept commercials on TV?\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Does the consumer actually care or feel they should be at least told?<\/p>\n<p>Is selling a toll lane fair to\u00a0all consumers?\u00a0 You like Netflix; Netflix has paid the toll for the fast lane to the ISP,\u00a0 but I like Vudu or Hulu and they have not paid the toll &#8211; is that fair trade because every service provider could pay the toll &#8211; or &#8211; does create a situation were the ISP now dictates and controls which\u00a0sites or services you use.\u00a0\u00a0Does that create\u00a0an\u00a0environment where it is more\u00a0coercion and monopolistic?<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m left wondering is buyer beware good enough? \u00a0When it comes to signing up for internet service are they truly given in English that\u00a0the average consumer\u00a0can\u00a0understand all the information? Are they told the limitations; is there a download cap; do you pay more when you hit the cap or is it throttled back;\u00a0who has\u00a0paid the toll for the fast lane; etc. \u00a0 Are they truly given an informed choice or do they\u00a0simply buy based on the advertised features and price?\u00a0 Or\u00a0is there no other choice?\u00a0 Is all of this just to overwhelming for the avg. consumer to reasonably understand?\u00a0 I think buyer beware and industry that is self regulated by informed buyer choice is ideal.\u00a0 However does the choice exist and does informed buyer exist (commonly)?
