{"id":712,"date":"2015-02-27T16:51:16","date_gmt":"2015-02-27T16:51:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.technology-solved.com\/sw-austin-tx\/?p=712"},"modified":"2019-07-22T15:55:44","modified_gmt":"2019-07-22T15:55:44","slug":"can-get-virus-web-page","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.technology-solved.com\/sw-austin-tx\/can-get-virus-web-page\/","title":{"rendered":"Can I get a virus from a Web page?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The short answer is yes.\u00a0 This can actually happen a couple of different ways.\u00a0\u00a0 There are actually sites that sole and only purpose is to distribute\u00a0malware.\u00a0 However even valid\/legitimate websites can also become &#8220;poisoned&#8221;.\u00a0 A poisoned website is just a website that a been infected with malware.<br \/>\nAs a user\u00a0just\u00a0browsing the web\u00a0going to one of your\u00a0favorite\u00a0website, maybe its a\u00a0site for a\u00a0scuba shop\u00a0or\u00a0custom jewelry, you go to this site frequently and you know its not a bad site.\u00a0 Then one day out of the blue something different happens, an odd popup comes up.\u00a0 Maybe it claims to have found a virus or a few thousand infected files.\u00a0 Maybe, it claims your hard drive is going to fail.\u00a0 Maybe it says to view this you need to install or update something.\u00a0 Maybe\u00a0it gives you some\u00a0error message\u00a0in white letters\u00a0on a blue screen (what might by mistake\u00a0for a\u00a0Blue Screen of Death).\u00a0 Those are just a few examples of some false messages a bad or poisoned site might\u00a0show.\u00a0 Many of\u00a0those false message might\u00a0even look like they\u00a0came from\u00a0company that you know or\u00a0have heard of.\u00a0\u00a0Some\u00a0have and\u00a0can\u00a0mimic real programs.\u00a0 All of this\u00a0to play on your fears\u00a0and naivety.\u00a0 All to\u00a0trick you\u00a0in to the next\u00a0step &#8211;\u00a0clicking ok, yes, accept, install, next\u00a0&#8211; or whatever.\u00a0 Anti-malware programs at this point have a huge problem in being able to detect many of these to protect you.\u00a0\u00a0From what the Anti-malware\u00a0sees in many cases it looks just like any other webpage doing things a website should do.<\/p>\n<p>There is\u00a0good news however <!--more--><br \/>\nAs long as you have not clicked that button to do whatever action (install, scan, fix, ok, yes, next, run, etc.) they want you to do, at that point it is just a webpage.\u00a0\u00a0 Just Close the website.\u00a0 If you cannot close it by normal means try closing with the keyboard shortcut (See chart below). If that\u00a0does not work force it closed.<\/p>\n[ezcol_1third]\nClose with keyboard shortcut<br \/>\nForce close [\/ezcol_1third][ezcol_1third]\n<strong>Windows Users<\/strong><br \/>\nalt+f4<br \/>\nPress Ctrl+alt+delete, Select Task manger, highlight the browser, click &#8220;end task&#8221; [\/ezcol_1third][ezcol_1third_end]\n<strong>Mac Users<\/strong><br \/>\nCommand+Q<br \/>\nClick the Apple upper left, select &#8220;force quit&#8221;, highlight the browser, Click &#8220;Force Quit&#8221;[\/ezcol_1third_end]\n<p>Then do not go\u00a0back to the site.\u00a0 When you reopen the browser, you might be prompt to reopen the pages that where open when the browser was forced closed, you do not want to do that.\u00a0 If the site was something that you just happened upon by doing a web search than just move.\u00a0 If it is a sight you visit regularly and have an alternate method of contacting the site owners, I am sure they would appreciated the heads up that their site was poisoned.<\/p>\n<p>Some things user can do as a prevention to malware:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Get a good antimalware program and keep it updated<\/li>\n<li>Keep your operating system updated<\/li>\n<li>Keep your browser updated<\/li>\n<li>Keep Java Updated<\/li>\n<li>Keep Flash Player Updated<\/li>\n<li>Don&#8217;t be a positive happy clicker &#8211; It is Ok to Say &#8220;No&#8221;.\u00a0 If you don&#8217;t know what or why your being prompted to do something, say no until you can figure out what it is.<\/li>\n<li>Avoid &#8220;Free programs&#8221;\u00a0 &#8211; The major of malware we see comes included with &#8220;free programs&#8221;<br \/>\n-this can\u00a0be\u00a0free games, Free utility programs promising to make your computer fast, free screen savers, free coupon or rebate finders.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Website owners you (or web person) have an on-going job of maintaining your site to prevent getting poisoned too:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Make sure the password to your sites ftp and control panel is a strong one<\/li>\n<li>Make sure the web hosting company is keeping up with the updates to the servers OS, PHP, perl, and MySQL<\/li>\n<li>Backup your site\u00a0daily &#8211; even if you have not changed it.<\/li>\n<li>If you are using something like Joombla, WordPress, Modx, etc. as a CMS (Content Management System) keep it updated.<\/li>\n<li>Sign\u00a0with Sitelock or\u00a0add an antimalware check to site.\u00a0 Most major Anti-mail companies\u00a0have\u00a0something for websites as well.<\/li>\n<li>Regularly\u00a0go out\u00a0to your site\u00a0and make sure everything is still\u00a0good.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The short answer is yes.\u00a0 This can actually happen a couple of different ways.\u00a0\u00a0 There are actually sites that sole and only purpose is to distribute\u00a0malware.\u00a0 However even valid\/legitimate websites can also become &#8220;poisoned&#8221;.\u00a0 A poisoned website is just a website that a been infected with malware.
