VPN, Virtual Private Networking, is a establishing an encrypted tunnel over the internet between two sites or a client workstation to a site.\u00a0\u00a0 It allows you to use shared network resources (files stored on a server) over the internet but more securely.\u00a0\u00a0 It works by sending everything between the two points encrypted.\u00a0\u00a0 In many ways it is like extending your local area network (your home or office) to another location over the internet.\u00a0 There several ways and protocols to choose from in setting on up. Like most encryption most involve haves some sort of pre-shared key but some can use a user id and password.\u00a0\u00a0 In many senses VPN was and is the first \u201ccloud\u201d base file storage solution.\u00a0\u00a0 The difference between a VPN and most Cloud file share solution is all files stay on your devices, on your property, and under your control.<\/p>\n

You might see the term VPN used\u00a0as an\u00a0anonymous VPN or a “Private Internet VPN”.\u00a0 These services offer you\u00a0a way to access the internet Anonymously without being tracked.\u00a0 This is\u00a0a big load of horse hockey!\u00a0They are\u00a0using a part truth\u00a0in selling you as services that does not do\u00a0what they claim.\u00a0 Remember a VPN\u00a0is\u00a0an\u00a0encrypted tunnel\u00a0from Point\u00a0A (your computer) to\u00a0Point\u00a0B (some other end of the tunnel).\u00a0 If something\u00a0tries to intercept\u00a0your data in the tunnel in between the\u00a0two points, it is un-readable. That part is\u00a0the true\u00a0part.\u00a0 \u00a0However that data is readable at both points A and B. Once it is decrypted at point B and passed on to another point, it is still decrypted.\u00a0 In other words, if you are using one of these in hopes that it will hide your search history from Google, you’re wrong.\u00a0 What you searched on is readable on your computer – passed through an encrypted tunnel to a middle point – than passed on to Google unencrypted.
\nThey might also try and claim that you have an “assigned, tractable IP address” by\u00a0use this private\u00a0VPN\u00a0it gives you an untraceable IP address.\u00a0 Again horse hockey – unless you are at a business that has a need for a static IP address in most case both home and small business typically are not given a single Static IP.\u00a0\u00a0 The majority of IP address are dynamic and change.\u00a0\u00a0At best\u00a0your IP\u00a0can be tracked to your\u00a0city and\u00a0internet service provider\u00a0but not you.\u00a0 Regardless all IP\u00a0address\u00a0are traceable – how\u00a0do you think information gets back to you.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Do\u00a0not let these\u00a0guys convened you otherwise.<\/p>\n
