What is Malware?

Published on: October 27th, 2014

Malware is an IT made up word combining the words Malleolus and software. It is software that has some malleolus or undisclosed purpose. It is generic term for many different types of “bad” programs, including spyware, adware, and viruses. The definition can vary greatly from one source to other, some might not include viruses in their definition.  Where others might not include adware or spyware in their definition.  This is important to understand as many download sites for programs claim to be “malware free”, what exactly is their definition of malware? It is also import to understand the definition differences when looking at protective software like anti-virus and anti-malware programs. Do they protect against all forms of malware including spyware, adware and viruses? Or do they protect against one or two of the categories. Please note that even the best anti-malware program only protects you against a fraction or subset of the whole. No anti-malware program stops your free-will to install you what choice on your computer even if it is malware.
Thing you can do to Combating Malware –

  1. Get a good anti-malware program
  2. Never open anything from anyone you do not specifically who they are and what it is (that includes things from people you know)
  3. “FREE” is not so free – most malware we see comes from “free” programs
avoid utilities promising to make your computer faster or fix errors,
avoid free screen savers, rebate notifies, coupon printers etc.
    avoid free games.
  4. It is OK to say NO – to prompts.
If you do not know what it is, No should be the default go to answer.  Far more damage is done to your computer by saying yes or ok than no. True you might not be able to open that one thing but you’ll be better off for it. By saying No first you have the chance to go research what it was ask then make a knowledgeable decision as to what you let on your computer.
