CES 2018 Goodies!

Published on: January 18th, 2018

“CES 2018 – The Global Stage for Innovation” was held last week. It was a huge showcase of new advances and products in technology. I’ve highlighted a few for you to check out, and then we look at a story from a man who considers himself a “white hat hacker.” The story he shares is well worth reading. And since his story ends in his garage, let’s take a look at Nissan’s approach to the autonomous car – using the driver’s brain to control the technology.

Goodies from the 2018 technology show:

Visa and Dynamics Unveil Wallet Card with Cell Phone Antenna

Brought to you by Visa and Dynamics Inc., a reprogrammable payment card dubbed the “Dynamics Wallet Card.” The card has a “cell phone chip and antenna which facilitates data transfer between the Wallet Card and a consumer’s bank anywhere in the world and at any time of the day.” The card can contain payment information for multiple cards, and because the card is always connected to your bank, the minute you realize one of your credit cards has been compromised, the theory is that you can contact your bank and they will immediately issue you a new “card” – by reprogramming your Wallet Card. No more waiting for a replacement credit card to show up in the mail.

“Think Like a Hacker”

A “white hat” hacker’s view of the security, or lack thereof, of our connected devices, and specifically smart garage door openers that allow you to open or close your garage door from your cell phone, laptop, etc., from anywhere in the world. Is that a good thing, or a bad thing? After reading this article, you may want to re-think using devices such as these.

When your connected devices were set up, did you remember change the manufacturer’s default password? Check that right away, and reset them ASAP. See this and other security measures at the end of the following article:

Driverless (or automated) cars have been in the news a lot lately. They use computers to replace drivers, but it hasn’t been completely successful as yet. Nissan, instead of focusing solely on improving the computers that drive the vehicle, is taking a different approach: they are “studying how our brains can augment computer systems in cars.” Imagine wearing a cap that measures your brain waves and activity, analyzes it in real time, and then transmits the information to onboard computers which use the information to make driving changes faster than you are able to yourself. In this scenario, the car computers can even sense when the driver is uncomfortable, and make environmental changes meant to relax the driver. Amazing stuff!
